The RBT exam at a glance
The RBT exam is the Behavior Analyst Certification Board's certification exam for Registered Behavior Technicians, the entry-level practitioners who deliver ABA services under supervision. It has 85 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, 75 scored and 10 unscored pilot items, taken at a Pearson VUE test center. Since January 1, 2026 it follows the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd edition): data collection and graphing, behavior assessment, behavior acquisition, behavior reduction, documentation and reporting, and ethics. The result is pass or fail against a passing score set by the modified Angoff method, not published as a percentage.

1. Know your measurement types cold
Frequency, rate, duration, latency and interresponse time are continuous; partial interval, whole interval and momentary time sampling are not. Know which one overestimates, which underestimates, and which fits a behavior you want to increase or decrease.
2. Name the function, then the procedure
Most behavior reduction questions turn on function: attention, escape, tangible or automatic. Match extinction and replacement behaviors to that function, and remember the extinction burst before things improve.
3. Stay inside the RBT role
Ethics, documentation and reporting together are almost a third of the exam. The right answer is usually to follow the written plan, report objectively and promptly, and ask your supervisor, never to design or change a plan yourself.
4. Fix your misses, then retest

Since January 1, 2026 the exam follows the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd edition): Data Collection and Graphing 13 scored questions, Behavior Assessment 8, Behavior Acquisition 19, Behavior Reduction 14, Documentation and Reporting 10, and Ethics 11. Each 50-question practice test here keeps that balance.
What changed with the RBT 3rd edition outline?
The 3rd edition replaced the RBT Task List (2nd edition). Skill Acquisition became Behavior Acquisition with a smaller share, Measurement became Data Collection and Graphing with new tasks on summarizing data and reading trends, and Professional Conduct became Ethics, with specific tasks on supervision, confidentiality, public statements, multiple relationships and gifts.
