The SSC CHSL exam at a glance
SSC CHSL Tier 1 is a computer-based paper of 100 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, set by the Staff Selection Commission for LDC, JSA and Data Entry Operator posts. It has four parts of 25 questions: English Language, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness, and the 2026 notice gives each part a sectional timer of 15 minutes. Each right answer earns 2 marks (200 in all) and each wrong answer loses 0.50 marks. Tier 1 is a qualifying stage: candidates who clear the category cut-off go on to Tier 2, which decides the final merit.

How It Works
Topic Drills
Eight drills, two for each part of Tier 1: grammar and cloze, vocabulary and reading, analogy and coding, relations and logic, arithmetic, algebra and geometry, history and polity, and geography and science. Questions you miss come back until you have mastered them.
Full Mock Tests
Two mock tests of 100 questions in 60 minutes, with a 15-minute timer on each of the four parts, as in the 2026 notice. Move and flag questions inside a part; once its timer ends, the next part opens. Mock Test 2 is held out of the drills, so it measures readiness.
Built on the Tier 1 Pattern
Every mock test follows the Staff Selection Commission's Tier 1 pattern: four parts of 25 questions, 2 marks each, 200 marks in 60 minutes, with 15 minutes for each part. The real exam takes 0.50 marks off for every wrong answer, so a wrong guess costs a quarter of a right answer. Tigertest scores percent correct; to see your exam-style score, take twice your correct answers and subtract half your wrong ones. The real paper also has figure-based reasoning questions, which these text-only tests leave out.

Share FeedbackHow to Prepare for SSC CHSL Tier 1
1. Work to the 15-minute timers
Each part has its own 15 minutes, so you have 36 seconds a question and no way to borrow time from General Awareness for a hard maths question. Answer the quick ones first inside each part, flag the slow ones, and come back to them before the timer ends. Full mock tests are the place to practise this.
2. Respect the negative marking
A wrong answer costs 0.50 marks. A blind guess among four gains only 0.125 marks on average and is a gamble; once you can rule out one or two options, the guess is clearly worth taking. Accuracy matters more than the number of questions attempted.
3. Make arithmetic fast, not just right
Percentages, profit and discount, ratio, averages, interest, work and speed make up most of the quant part. Learn the quick methods (successive discounts, the x + 1/x identities, standard trigonometric values) and drill each topic until it is fast as well as right. Tigertest's explanations show the short method.
4. Build static GK, then add current affairs
History, culture, the Constitution, geography, the economy and everyday science are asked every year and do not go out of date. Master them here, then add the last twelve months of current affairs from a recent source, since these change with each exam cycle.
SSC CHSL Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SSC CHSL Tier 1 exam pattern?
Tier 1 is one computer-based paper of 100 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. It has four parts of 25 questions and 50 marks each: English Language, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness. The 2026 notice gives each part its own sectional timer of 15 minutes (20 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe), so you cannot move time from one part to another. The General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness parts are set in English, Hindi and the regional language chosen in the application form.
Is there negative marking in SSC CHSL Tier 1?
Yes. Each wrong answer costs 0.50 marks, a quarter of the 2 marks a right answer earns, and an unanswered question scores zero. With four options a blind guess gains only 0.125 marks on average and often costs 0.50, so guess only when you can rule out at least one option. Tigertest mock tests score percent correct and do not deduct marks, so compare your score with how many questions you would have attempted.
What marks do I need to clear SSC CHSL Tier 1?
The 2026 notice sets minimum qualifying marks of 30 percent for unreserved candidates, 25 percent for OBC and EWS candidates and 20 percent for all other categories. Clearing the minimum is not enough on its own: the Commission shortlists candidates for Tier 2 by category-wise cut-offs that change every year, and the final merit list is made from Tier 2 marks only. On Tigertest, aim for 75 percent or more on both mock tests with few wrong answers.
Are these the same questions as the real SSC CHSL exam?
No. These are original practice questions written to the official SSC CHSL syllabus and pattern, not questions copied from past papers or the real exam. Reasoning is text only, so the figure-based question types on the real paper are not included, and general awareness covers static topics such as history, polity, geography, economy and science. Current affairs change every year, so study them separately from a recent source.
Is the Tigertest SSC CHSL mock test free?
Yes. Both mock tests and all eight topic drills are free, with no account required. Create a free account if you want your progress saved across your phone and computer.
I teach an SSC coaching batch. Can my students use Tigertest?
Yes, for free. Make a class at tigertest.io/teach, post one link, and students join with just their name. You see who practiced, their test scores and the topics your class misses most.
